Who supports the Republic of China using the name “Taiwan,” the independence name? The PRC does.
As most of the international scholars know, the official name of Taiwan is the Republic of China, ROC. Actually, most of my friends in the USA, who are military officers all of the world, do not know my country’s official name. They all know that I am from Taiwan. For them, Taiwan is just like a country name. They call other countries this way, for example, Germany, Italy, Spain, Senegal, Nigeria, Korea (or South Korea), and Indonesia, etc. In the international political community, the name of “Republic of China” is a taboo because the People’s Republic of China (PRC) opposes using it in everywhere. The PRC disallows all other countries and international organizations using it as a country name. Therefore, we use “Taiwan” as our country’s official name when we introduce ourselves, so as other countries.
Most of the countries and international societies use this name, “Taiwan,” when they talk or discuss the issues about Taiwan. They seldom use “Chinese Taipei,” or “China Taipei,” which is accepted by the PRC. “Chinese Taipei” accepted both by Taiwan and China will be only used as the official name at the organizations Taiwan attended. “China Taipei,” which is not accepted by the PRC but Taiwan, would not be seen or used. In all articles mentioned my country, “Taiwan” is also the name used all the time. Besides, it is the name used by all of the official and non-official organizations. “Taiwan” becomes another official name of the ROC.
“Taiwan” is not only called by other countries and international societies but also by the PRC. You can see it in their official newspapers and magazines. They call us “Taiwan authority.” They call our military “the Army of Taiwan” or “the military of Taiwan.” Will the officers of the PRC call Si-Chuan province, one of their provinces which had earthquake later year, “Si-Chuan Authority?” Will they call their troops in some area inside Mainland China the same way as they call Taiwanese military? Of Course not. The way they call Taiwanese military is just as the way they call the US military. The PRC will never say that Taiwan is an independence country but all its behaviors for treating Taiwan are just supporting its independence requirement.
“Taiwan” is the name of this area and, of course, is the name tried to be called by all the independent movement supporters inside or outside this island. They think that the PRC call this area “Taiwan” as a local government. They don’t realize that the PRC treat Taiwan just using as the same method as the other independence countries. You can say I am trying to defend oneself by sophistry but the PRC is just doing it by this way. The PRC has used this way for more than a half century. How does the PRC change it? It’s a dilemma for the PRC.
